Several initiatives seek to regulate the use of plastics—or, more precisely, to curb the pollution caused by plastic waste. In Brazil, the Decree on Reverse Logistics for Plastic Packaging came into force this year. Globally, discussions continue toward a Global Treaty on Plastic Pollution endorsed by the United Nations (UN).

When it was announced in 2022, the treaty was expected to be finalized by the end of 2024, following five meetings involving the organization’s member countries.

The deadline has now been exceeded by more than a year, and seven rounds of discussions have taken place without an agreement. Yet the discussions continue, albeit more slowly than expected.

There is even a date—still provisional—for the next meeting of the INC (the English acronym for the International Negotiating Committee, the treaty’s highest decision-making body, which brings together the heads of delegations from UN member countries).
